The Steve Selvin Scholarship Fund provides support for biostatistics students at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.
Steve Selvin (Ph.D. '70) was a statistician and Emeritus Professor of Biostatistics at the School of Public Health. He was recognized numerous times by Berkeley for his excellence in teaching, and in 2011 was awarded the Berkeley Citation for distinguished service to the University. His research interests included epidemiologic methods, spatial analysis, matched pairs design, and statistical analysis of epidemiologic data. Professor Selvin authored or co-authored over 60 publications, and in 1975, posed and solved the Monty Hall problem.
But what people remember most about Steve was the person he was.
Your gift honors Prof. Selvin's extraordinary legacy at Berkeley Public Health, and will be added to an endowment that provides permanent support for biostatistics student support. The fund is combined with other funds for investment purposes but is tracked separately, with annual distributions transferred to campus for expenditure. In order to preserve the spirit of the fund's purpose and the intent of the original donors, new donors who make gifts to this endowment understand that changes may be made to the fund in the future if it ever becomes difficult to spend. Any future changes will be consistent with the original purpose. By making a gift, new donors agree that any future potential change to the endowment purpose may be made without their consultation.
