This endowment will provide funding to be used at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research. The endowment is created in memory of Joe and Flora Arai and in honor of their daughter, Candace Yano, a distinguished professor in both IEOR and the Haas School of Business. Candi’s friends and former students established the endowment, and a generous donor will match the first $100,000 in new contributions to the fund.
Children of Japanese immigrants, Joe and Flora Arai made it a priority to help their daughters go to college, an opportunity they did not have themselves. Candi made the most of it, earning three degrees at Stanford, teaching at the University of Michigan for 10 years, and joining the Berkeley faculty in 1993. Many students at both Berkeley and Michigan cite Candi’s help in advancing their careers. This endowment will help many more students thrive in the future.
In order to preserve the spirit of the purpose of the endowment and the intent of the donors who established it, new donors understand that changes may be made to the purpose in the future if it ever becomes difficult to spend. Any such change will be consistent with the original purpose. New donors agree that any future potential change to the endowment purpose may be made without their consultation.
Friends and former students Professor Candace Yano have endowed this discretionary fund for the Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research in her honor and in memory of her parents, Joe and Flora Arai. The fund will support the department’s top priorities.
Our initial online fundraising drive has ended, but we continue to grow the fund to honor Professor Yano and Joe and Flora Arai. Information is available to give by check or other means or, for questions, contact Dale Masterson, Executive Director, Development, College of Engineering, (510) 725-5811 or dmasterson@berkeley.edu.
