The Donald R. Foster Scholarship was created in memory of Cal legend and indefatigable Golden Bear, Don Foster. Don began running track in Pt. Loma High School and ran the fastest half mile in the city of San Diego at that time. When he got to Cal, Don lettered in both cross country and track while majoring in finance. During a pivotal cross country meet against Stanford, Don set a new course record and time leading the Bears to a glorious victory on Stanford’s campus. He was also on the cross country team that defeated the championship USC squad. He was a member of Sigma Chi and served in the Air Force ROTC.
After graduation, he received numerous certificates from Wharton, Stanford, Harvard and the University of Chicago. Don held many leadership roles in his impressive career, including his remarkable success in the field of Municipal Bonds and Stocks, and serving as the President of the Financial Analysts Society of San Diego. Don’s crowning professional milestone, which showcased his true entrepreneurial spirit, was when he launched and ran his own securities firm, Foster Securities, a very successful enterprise which thrived for almost 40 years.
With his great sense of humor, love of life, and his innate humility, Don had an uncanny knack for putting people together and at ease, especially at a sporting event. Thanks to the generosity of his wife Barbara and his much loved friends, this scholarship was founded in honor and memory of Don for the future track and field athletes at Cal, a college he so loved. Please consider supporting this endowed scholarship to help memorialize Don's legacy at Cal. GO BEARS!
Your gifts will go a long way to supporting the Cal track & field and cross-country programs! Go Bears!
