Members of the History Department invite donations to the Richard and Valerie Herr Graduate Student Support Fund in History, whose recipients will be history Ph.D. candidates of high academic distinction pursuing the study of history of any area outside the United States, with a preference for Spain and the Mediterranean region.
The fund was established with gifts from Richard and Valerie Herr. A specialist in Spain and France in the 18th and 19th centuries, Richard joined the UC Berkeley History Department in 1960 and remained an active member of the academic community for six decades. Valerie came to Berkeley in 1966. She completed a Ph.D. in geography at Berkeley and went on to lecture at UC Santa Cruz. Richard and Valerie nurtured and entertained UC Education Abroad students in Madrid, graduate students in Berkeley, and visiting European Hispanists. They sought to promote Iberian studies in the broadest sense.
