Your gift makes a difference

Your gift will honor the memory of Janet Theiss (1964–2025) who was a distinguished historian of late-imperial China. In 1998, she earned her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. Her seminal work, Disgraceful Matters: The Politics of Chastity in Eighteenth-Century China, traced how Qing-era legal and ritual institutions shaped notions of virtue, gender, and state power. She also co-authored Gender in Modern East Asia, exploring gender, family, and society across China, Korea, and Japan. Known for her rigorous archival scholarship and generosity as a mentor for graduate and undergraduate students, Theiss left a lasting legacy in Chinese legal and gender history.

In order to preserve the spirit of the purpose of the fund, and the intent of the original donors who established it, new donors who make gifts to this endowment understand that changes may be made to the fund in the future if it ever becomes difficult to spend. Any future changes will be consistent with the original purpose as written here.
