The Script Encoding Initiative

Your gift makes a difference

Millions of people use scripts that cannot yet be reliably typed or displayed on digital devices. The Script Encoding Initiative (SEI) works to change that, funding the technical proposals, linguistic research, and community outreach needed to bring more of the world's writing systems into the Unicode Standard — the global system underlying all digital text. To date, SEI has contributed to the successful encoding of over 120 scripts — from Egyptian Hieroglyphs to Hanifi Rohingya — but over 150 scripts remain outside the Standard.

Your support ensures that proposal authors, scholars, script experts, and community representatives can do the work of preserving the world's writing systems for future generations. Learn more
