For 30 years, Dr. Harry Edwards captivated students at the University of California, Berkeley and nearly 600 educational institutions around the world by challenging conventional wisdom and sparking interest in the sociology of sports. Dr. Edwards was a trusted advisor to the leadership of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association, and his research shaped international efforts such as the 1968 Olympic Project for Human Rights. The "Last Lecture" series — fourteen hours of compelling video lectures — provides a deep dive into the historical forces that have shaped the world of sports and the interplay of athletics and society at large.

In this 12-part series, Dr. Edwards masterfully weaves together decades of history, revealing unexpected connections between sport and society shedding light on the controversial, often untold stories that have been deliberately erased or conveniently forgotten. Each lecture is a standalone masterpiece. Dr. Edwards’ teaching style is legendary—a unique blend of razor-sharp analysis, compelling storytelling, and a fearless willingness to challenge dogma. This lecture series is his final and most important statement, a testament to a lifetime of intellectual inquiry and a parting gift to those who crave a deeper, more truthful understanding of the world. This is sociology as it should be taught: bold, unapologetic, and profoundly relevant.

This fund will support the Department of Sociology in the development and delivery of courses that are based on the "Last Lecture" videos.
