Disability studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the concept of disability from social, cultural, historical, artistic, legal, and political perspectives. Faculty dissect the societal perceptions and power structures that influence the lived experiences of people whose mind or body deviates from societal norms.
Students gain insights to improve their own analysis of cultural representation, accessible architecture, medical ethics, human rights, and inclusive policies. They can use these multifaceted explorations in a wide variety of disciplines. Upon graduation, alums are prepared to lead rewarding careers in education, government, advocacy, cultural criticism, social work, and public health.
Few universities offer academic programs around disability studies, which is why it’s so important for UC Berkeley to invest in ours. Berkeley is a global hub for disability rights and scholarship — our alums have secured monumental policy victories and faculty members have transformed society’s approach to disability.
