The VèVè A. Clark Institute for Engaged Scholars of African American Studies

Your gift makes a difference

Named in honor of Professor VèVè Amasasa Clark, the Clark Institute prepares students majoring in African American Studies to meet the rigor and intellectual demands of top professional schools, graduate programs, and postgraduate careers. Your gift supports program activities, including independent research projects, monthly seminar meetings with graduate student mentors, educational travel experiences, and research presentations at the annual St. Clair Drake Symposium. Clark Scholars have gone on to become tenured faculty at top-tier institutions, superior court judges and litigators, and accomplished researchers and archivists.

Your support allows the Department of African American Studies to continue providing the transformational mentorship opportunities that allow students to succeed beyond UC Berkeley. With your help, we can extend this opportunity to more African American Studies majors and grow our community of scholars.

"When you're at a school that has over 33,000 undergraduate students, it can feel like you're alone, in a big ocean, but with the Clark Scholars, it's a very tight-knit group. We encourage each other, we're there for each other. That community is very fruitful." — Tessa Graham-Person, VèVè A. Clark Institute Scholar
