Addressing health disparities is essential for unlocking greater economic and social stability globally, particularly in our interconnected world. Yet research focused on diseases that disproportionately threaten underserved and vulnerable populations worldwide lags far behind research on conditions that affect affluent countries. This alliance was founded on the principle that building global scientific capacity is essential for empowering every society to address the diseases that most affect them. UC Berkeley’s excellence in scientific research, commitment to teaching, and focus on social justice combine to create a powerful foundation for advancing global scientific capacity. Established in 2016, the alliance partners with Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda to strengthen capacity for independent health sciences research in East Africa.
