The Don Dahlsten Outreach Fund
Gifts to the Don Dahlsten fund support the California Outdoor Engagement Coalition. Your support will expand transformational experiences for youth, who reflect the overall demographics of the state, to play, learn, serve and work in the outdoors.
The coalition is comprised of cross-sector partners with the shared vision that all youth in California, regardless of background, have the opportunity to develop deep, personal connections to nature. UC Berkeley’s College of Natural Resources launched the California Outdoor Engagement Coalition following the 2015 Science for Parks, Parks for Science conference, in anticipation of the National Park Service Centennial the following year.
The Don Dahlsten Outreach Fund was established in 2003 to honor Don Dahlsten’s commitment to community outreach. Don Dahlsten was a Professor of Entomology in the College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1974 to 2003.
Over the course of his 40-year career, Dahlsten developed a reputation as one of the world's most respected leaders in biological control, a field that had gained momentum in the 1960s as an alternative to the increasingly ineffective use of chemical pesticides. His research focused on the development of ecologically-sensitive methods for controlling insects that feed on trees in forests and in urban environments.
Don passed away on September 3, 2003, after a 2-year battle with a rare type of skin cancer. The Don Dahlsten Outreach Fund honors his legacy and commitment to community outreach. Your donation will help build the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and environmental stewards.
