The Mathematical & Physical Sciences Undergraduate Research Fund

The Undergraduate Research Fund for Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MPS) supports students in the MPS division through stipends for summer research fellowships, research positions in campus labs, and individual research projects with our esteemed faculty. Research opportunities at Berkeley are plentiful, but competition is fierce with so many motivated students. Doing independent or collaborative research at Berkeley provide students with experiences in experiment design and hypothesis testing, lab work and management, and collaboration with world-class faculty and graduate students that yield valuable letters of recommendation and references.

Gifts and pledges in increments of $5,000 fund entire summer research fellowships (SURFs) for students, meaning they can focus on getting the most out of a research experience instead of working simply to cover expenses, or dividing their time between a part-time job and unpaid internships. Receiving awards through SURF will not impact students' financial aid since it is classified as part of the "self-help" portion of their packages. Gifts to undergraduate research help level the playing field for students of all backgrounds in the Math & Physical Sciences, which historically have faced challenges with retention. Now, with more students declaring an MPS major than ever before, the division sees undergraduate research as an important way to help all our students pursue their interests with a supportive community, and without being burdened.
