Make a gift to the Berkeley Fund for Faculty Excellence in Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Berkeley has a long history of world-class research and scholarship in the areas of Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics. From Ernest O. Lawrence to Shiing-Shen Chern, David Blackwell to Saul Perlmutter, Walter Alvarez to Chung-Pei Ma, our faculty have made paradigm-shifting discoveries and they’ve educated students who have done the very same.

Today, shrinking state support and pursuant budget cuts are jeopardizing our ability to recruit and retain researchers when other institutions come calling. While the recruitment and retention of world-class faculty has always been a competitive and expensive endeavor, it has never been more challenging than it is today. As with most institutions, we are only as good as our people, and to ensure that Berkeley maintains its place as the best public university in the world, we must safeguard our ability to hire and keep the best faculty.

The Berkeley Fund for Faculty Excellence in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences was created to address this pressing priority. “Everything we do hinges on our faculty in Math and Physical Sciences,” says Dean Frances Hellman, “and we are competing with institutions whose pockets are much deeper than ours. As Dean, it is my priority to maintain the excellence of our faculty, our research, and the education of our students.”
