Founded in 2007, Blue Oak Ranch Reserve is a 3,280 acre Biological Field Station and Ecological Reserve, one of the 39 units of the UC Natural Reserve System, and is operated jointly by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Berkeley Natural History Museums and the NRS. The mission of the Natural Reserve System is to contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California.
Less than a 2 hour drive from campus, Blue Oak Ranch (BORR) is being used as a scientific research site to conduct investigations across the Earth and Life Sciences, Engineering and Computer Sciences, and including studies in the arts and humanities. In any given year 15-20 projects may run concurrently, generating 10-12 scientific articles based upon research carried out in this unique protected natural area. BORR hosts numerous university-level class visits each year which focus on ecology and conservation. Recently completed overnight accommodations can sleep up to 60, with access to a 24 seat classroom, a 70 seat multi-purpose room, a large group kitchen, a field laboratory, and high-speed network access to campus and the Internet.
