Arts + Design Initiative
For nearly 150 years, UC Berkeley has played a unique role as a national leader in higher education, recognized both for its research excellence and for being an engine of social mobility. The arts, design, and creativity have been central to that history, and they will be key to the future of UC Berkeley. Our arts and design landscape offers a unique context for creative experimentation, profoundly enriched by the scientific and cultural wealth of a world-class research university, and propelled by our historic commitment to equity, public access and social impact. The campus features a broad range of leading academic departments, museums, presenting organizations, research centers, and student clubs in the arts and design, as well as award-winning faculty and alumni in all creative fields. UC Berkeley’s Arts + Design Initiative (A+D) seeks to feature-our campus’s wide-ranging creative ethos, to synchronize the operations of multiple units, and to claim Berkeley’s status as a global creative leader.
In its first full academic year, FY15, the Initiative expanded arts education and student arts engagement through new arts gateway courses, a new digital arts pass, and expanded academic program offerings. A+D is also building a foundation for growth by imagining the renovation of Dwinelle Annex as a hub for Arts + Design research, education, and arts access. This historic building designed by renowned campus architect John Galen Howard, will offer a design lab, a flexible performance studio, a gallery and forum space for exhibition, screening, and community convening, as well as meeting and studio spaces.
If you would like to make an unrestricted gift to support excellence in arts and design at Berkeley, please consider directing your gift to the Arts + Design Initiative Fund . This fund will support programs directed by the Associate Vice Chancellor for the Arts + Design that enhance teaching, research, and student experience across campus.
