Make a gift to the Department of Physics!
We deeply appreciate your generosity toward the Department of Physics. Your gift will help enhance our research efforts, create and support academic opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and improve facilities.
The following funds have been established to benefit Physics:
The Friends of Physics Fund
Berkeley Physics is home to world-renowned scientists and researchers and is universally regarded as one of the top Physics departments in the world. Our talented faculty and students are engaged in research, innovation, and instruction at the forefront of many fields including astrophysics, biophysics, particle physics, theoretical physics, experimental physics, quantum physics, and condensed matter physics.
The Teaching and Learning Campaign (TLC) Fund in Physics
In order to keep Berkeley Physics at the forefront of fundamental research and a central training ground for the next generation of physicists, we hope to develop a new set of curriculum to train students to innovate, to combine tools and ideas to create a novel solution to a complex problem. TLC Fund will support new curriculum and upgrades of laboratory facilities for the introductory Physics courses - Physics 7 and 8, as well as to support upgrades to both our student machine shop and professional machine shop.
The Center for Quantum Coherent Science
The CQCS is an exciting new research center where young scientists work with leaders in the sub-fields of atomic and optical physics, condensed-matter physics, quantum information science, and high-energy and string theory. Here they explore the richness, complexity, and practical application of quantum mechanics, quantum states, and quantum systems. Your gift to the CQCS will support the students and postdoctoral researchers of the CQCS community who are developing their unique perspective on scientific work in an interdisciplinary environment.
The Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics
The greatest minds in theoretical physics are collaborating on some of the most pressing scientific questions about the universe at the BCTP. Current cutting-edge research areas include particle theory, string theory, cosmology and the early universe, phenomenology beyond the standard model, quantum field theory, quantum gravity, topological strings, and energy research. Your donation to the BCTP will help ensure the center’s continued ability to galvanize the strengths of internationally renowned faculty in all sub-groups of particle physics.
The Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics
There has never been a more exciting time for cosmologists. The BCCP brings all the resources of UC Berkeley and its worldwide collaborators to a new generation of cosmologists. Its rich suite of international research studies seek to address four fundamental questions: What is dark energy and how is it causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate? How did space-time come into being early in the universe? What is the dark matter surrounding galaxies and binding them together? Why is there more matter than antimatter in the current universe when they were in equal abundance at very early times? Your gift to the BCCP will support work to answer these questions, and many more.
The Berkeley Experimental Particle Physics Center
The BEPP seeks to discover what the universe is made of and why it has its present form using powerful state-of-the-art instruments, large scale computational processes, and novel analytical methods. Projects include investigating signs of physics beyond the standard model via the ATLAS collaboration, the search for dark matter particles through the LUX experiment, and researching the fundamental properties of neutrinos through experiments in China and Italy. Your donation to the BEPP will support fellowships, workshops, and outreach that are aimed at sparking innovation and developing a diverse future generation of instrumentation physicists.
The Charles H. Townes Graduate Fellowship
Memorial gifts for Nobel Laureate and Professor Emeritus Charles Hard Townes may be directed to this fund. The Charles H. Townes Graduate Fellowship fund is an endowment, the payout of which will support high-achieving graduate students in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley. Recipients shall be full-time graduate students who demonstrate high academic distinction. Prospective recipients will be identified, screened, and selected by the Chair of the Department of Physics or his/her designated representative.
More information about the department can be found at: physics.berkeley.edu.
